Working Well: Meet Kate

I am so excited today to introduce you to my friend, Kate, founder of Mavenly + Co! This actually isn't an introduction, because I have talked about her on the blog before, and honestly I could go on and on! Kate and I first met on the internet (thank you Instagram!), then formally in Miami thanks to our friend Sarah (interview coming soon!).When Kate and I met in person, I think it took us all of 10 seconds to launch full force into conversations about our businesses, and I could tell right from the start the passion and conviction that she carries for the work that she does. It's so inspiring to hear her share her vision for Mavenly + Co. and I am so excited that I can share more of her with you. And y'all, she's smart. This article is packed full of crazy good advice and resources and if that's not enough, you can listen to her podcast featuring advice from her, her team, and interviews with women working well all over the globe. Without further adieu... meet Kate:

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS/BRAND:

I’m the founder of Mavenly + Co., which is a company providing workshops and resources for young women designing a career and lifestyle with purpose. You (like my dad) might be asking: ‘What the heck does that even mean?!’ Well, it began with my first job out of college when I served as a consultant for my sorority Delta Gamma (yes, it's a real job!) and I met bright and ambitious young women all over the country who didn't have much guidance or support when it came to making post-graduate decisions about work and life, especially finding work they would thrive doing.

I started to help these women simply by interviewing women who enjoyed their work and lifestyle and putting the interviews online, and since then we've grown organically by continuing to listen to our audience’s needs. We now facilitate in-person workshops and trainings all over the country to assist women in not only identifying fulfilling work but the steps they need to get there.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART- WHAT REALLY LIGHTS YOU UP?

Finding new ways to cater to our audience and hearing their success stories. I love waking up to an email that says, ‘I listened to your podcast on negotiation, and I had a conversation with my boss about working from home and it worked! I’m 10x happier. Thank you.’ It truly brings me to tears, and I’m not a crier. Empowering women with tangible resources to make real change in their careers and lives is the greatest joy of my life.

WHAT ARE A FEW KEY WORDS YOU WOULD USE TO DESCRIBE YOUR BRAND?

One of my dear friends once described Mavenly + Co. as ‘actionable advice from your sassy and honest friend’ and it stuck with me. We pride ourselves on giving women resources they can use or implement within 24 hours of receiving it. I’m an executer by nature, so it’s important to me that I provide a service that women find tangible and useful. And though it might be ridiculous to say, the sassy part is important to me too. Too often we are conditioned to think business has to look like a board meeting with pie charts and pant suits, but it doesn’t! (what a relief!) We love that we can help women find success on their own terms being exactly who they are, so it’s important to me that our brand’s voice communicates that element of who we are. We can use #girlboss in our posts and be featured in Forbes — both of those speak to who we are.

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU LEARNED THE HARD WAY WHEN BUILDING YOUR BUSINESS?

Everyone has advice, and it’s not all good. If you’re a business owner of any kind you’ve heard from someone ‘You know what you should REALLY do?’ *cue polite smile*

But it’s easy when you’re first starting out to latch on to these suggestions because starting something new can be scary and filled with vulnerability. For a while we were taking all of these suggestions and doing travel guides and workout suggestions, but it really just diluted our content and confused our audience. When we started to refine our mission, we cleared out all the content that didn't speak directly to who we are and made a promise to ourselves to be disciplined in what we put out into the world. It’s served us well. The key is to find a few trusted peers and mentors who truly understand who you are and why you are and work with them to talk through business ideas. It’s harder than it sounds, but it’s worth it.

DO YOU HAVE ONE TIP THAT HAS REALLY BEEN A GAME CHANGER FOR YOUR BUSINESS?

TRUST YOUR GUT.

It’s the incredibly similar to the sentiment above, but it’s essential. If you started a business, there’s a reason why. Remember your why, know your why, and look at your why every day to make sure what you’re doing speaks to it in some way. Having a set of values or guiding principles you can crosscheck when you’re looking to make a decision is crucial and will keep you from off-brand decisions disguised as innovative ideas.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BUSINESS BOOK?

I don’t know if the author would call it a ‘business book,’ but I constantly find myself referencing Amanda Palmer’s The Art of Asking. Palmer, incredibly thoughtfully and eloquently, discusses the dilemma many creative entrepreneurs face daily, which is the shame and vulnerability around asking for and going after what you need to succeed. It helped me realize that I’m providing a service or product worth investing in. If you’ve ever said to yourself ‘Yeah, I worked really hard on this and it’s wonderful, but I can’t ask people to PAY for this,’ run to Barnes and Nobles, girl. Oh, and Brene Brown wrote the foreword. So, basically it’s gold.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE RESOURCE, WEBSITE, OR APP?

Favorite website: Brain Pickings. Without a doubt. It’s free and ad-free, but if you love it you should consider donating to keep it going. Favorite app: Teux Deux. Created by one of my all-time favorite designers, Tina Roth Eisenberg, it’s basically my brain when my brain just can’t do it. I do a ‘brain dump’ into it every day and the UI is exactly how my brain works. Lists for days.

ANY INFLUENCERS, BLOGGERS, #GIRLBOSSES THAT YOU FOLLOW FOR INSPIRATION?

Everyone we bring on the Women, Work and Worth podcast inspires me. There are many more, and some of them are here.

DO YOU HAVE A SONG THAT REALLY FIRES YOU UP AND MAKES YOU FEEL LIKE YOU CAN CONQUER THE WORLD?

Our team actually has a running playlist of pump up songs that we share to keep each other motivated. It’s a fun way to learn more about our coworkers and get some sweet new music recommendations. I highly recommend a team Spotify playlist.

HOW CAN WE KEEP UP WITH YOU?

The best way to keep up with us is following us on Instagram and subscribing to our podcast on iTunes. (It will hit your phone auto-magically every Sunday night/Monday morning in your podcast app.) We’re always updating our website with new workshops as well so keep any eye out for those.

Thanks again, Kate!
